| Who
are we? |
- We are queer rowers.
- That's not to say that we row in a
strange fashion, but rather we come from the "queer"
community i.e.; gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and even straight!
Some of us row bloody impressively, and regrettably, some of us don't
- but we are all out there putting in our oar!
|
| Where
are we? |
- We are everywhere, but we do most of our
rowing out of the Lord Somers Camp & Powerhouse Building on Albert
Park Lake in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
- For you folks from out of town, Albert
Park Lake is where the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix is held in
March, although we tend to think of the lake in more of a community
framework for the other 51 weeks of the year.
|
| Why
are we? |
- Well, that's a long story, but the short
version is that Sydney won the right to host the 2002 Gay Games and
there is no rowing because there was no GLBT rowing organisation to
host a regatta.
- It took a Canadian guy by the name of
christopher lefler (he prefers no capitalisation of his name) to draw
this to our attention and it is pretty much from there that we have
formed.
- Our mission is really complicated, and I
don't fully get it myself because it uses polysyllabic words that I
don't understand, but from what I can gather there are a few goals and
they are:
- To provide an alternative and healthy
environment for us queer folks to access the sport of rowing in an
atmosphere where we can just be ourselves and meet some like minded
people.
- To promote awareness of the queer
community in mainstream sport & address issues of homophobia in
sport in general.
- To provide an opportunity for anyone to
experience the phantasmagorical sport of rowing,
- To have a bloody good time.
- So, as you would expect, we are kinda
"out there" but the reality is that we are all rather dull
rowing geeks who spend our lives at the boatshed. Does that entice
you????????
